When I visited Auckland back in January, I came across &Sushi – a trendy new sushi joint that had only just recently opened up in Newmarket. But what’s so special about this place compared to the several other Japanese locales in the area?
For starters &Sushi is all about that gluten free, free range produce, and sustainable eco packaging lifestyle that seems to be popular in some groups. But knowing me, the purple rice and beetroot mayonnaise was already enough to garner my attention.
I arrived at a quiet time in the afternoon when the bulk of the sushi had already been sold. But the girl behind the counter gladly helped me with my photos by rearranging the remaining pieces of sushi; while I engaged in a friendly conversation with a staff member there about the store and how I came to find out about them.
The vast selections of rolls here vary in price ranging from $1.8 to $2.5. And it’s all self-serve. Although it’s a tad bit on the expensive side, the flavours here all sounded quite unique and unusual.
Kimchi, avocado and kumara puree. Bulgolgi beef with ponzu. Tuna mayonnaise, capsicum and siracha. Just to name a few. Oh and did I mention that there was a strawberry and cream cheese tofu roll as well? So apparently that’s a thing.
I can’t even remember everything that I got now that it’s been a few months but I do remember enjoying some more than others. Yes, it is a bit pricey for what you get and yes, some of it was a bit bland (probably too healthy for my liking!) but it was an interesting food experience nonetheless.
&Sushi not only serves sushi rolls, but also offers a hearty menu filled with donburi bowls, noodles and gyoza dumpling appetisers. I’d be willing to come back to try out more of the other sushi roll flavours though!
Strawberry and Cream Cheese Tofu Roll
I was really tempted to get this wonderfully weird sounding dessert/sushi concoction, but decided not to in the end. Apparently it’s pretty good from what I’ve heard! Oh wells, maybe next time 😉
More than just your average sushi shop.
