The famous Salamanca Markets in Hobart is held every Saturday and is a major tourist attraction in Tassie. We decided to check out the area anyway (despite visiting on a weekday) and came across these delicious pies.
We came across Salamanca Bakehouse by chance after passing up lunch at Smolt, a nearby Spanish restaurant that didn’t open until 12pm and we were too hungry to wait. So we ventured next door to this 24-hour bakery (yes its open all day!) with the delicious smell of pies wafting out from inside.
Chicken, Cheese & Asparagus Pie $7.5
What drew my attention initially into eating here was the selection of pies that they had. Lester and I tried one of their newer pies on the menu: this chicken, cheese and asparagus pie. And boy, was it good. Inside the hot flaky pastry were pieces of chicken in a creamy white sauce with cuts of asparagus throughout. Yum!
They had a pretty extensive pie menu available — including that of Tassie’s renowned scallop curry pie. Other notable pie flavours included venison and stout, butter chicken, and atlantic salmon with silver warehou sauce.
Butter Chicken $7.5
Still hungry, we went back for more. This time around we both ordered a butter chicken pie because it sounded good. I hadn’t come across butter chicken for a pie filling before. Turns out, this pie was twice as good as the one before! Also butter chicken has now officially made top three in my list of delicious pie fillings ?
Look at that beautiful and rich butter chicken inside ?
All in all, we had a surprisingly satisfying lunch here at Salamanca Bakehouse. What I loved more than the pretty marble tables here was the fact that seemed to be stocked with pies 24/7. I know now where I’ll be heading to for my late night cravings when I’m in town 😉
Open 24/7 with a big menu of delicious pies available!
