The newest kid on the block since December, Uncommon. is a bright and airy eatery located in Windsor with white walls, a pretty array of suspending plants and an unsuspectingly healthy menu.
In the past few weeks, Laura and I seemed to be a bit over the whole Melbourne brunch scene. Maybe it was because we had already hit up most of the places worth checking out in town, or maybe we were just tired of seeing the same old culprits on every menu. However when we saw the menu here at Uncommon, we were both visibly intrigued.
“We want people to eat the food and not really know it was healthy until they are told.” says co owner Will Newton on the cafe’s menu which promotes unprocessed, organic, sustainable whole foods. But it’s so creatively constructed that you won’t even realise you’re stepping into the unmarked territories of #cleaneating.
Banana & Golden Flaxseed Pikelets $16.5
True to form, Laura went for the prettiest looking dish from above. These pikelets (just think of it as a thin and mini-er version of a pancake) came complete with strawberries, grapes, poached green melon, maple and toasted milk. So much fruity goodness! And toasted milk, whaaatt??
I only had a few bites of this dish and absolutely loved it! Laura on the other hand found it to be overly sweet on its own and found the need to balance it out with my savoury scrambled eggs below:
Salmon Pastrami w/Scrambled Eggs $17.5
It was hard to decide between this salmon pastrami or the market fish in coal oil, chickpea aioli and coconut bacon (it looks even better than it sounds). But Laura heard some good reviews about the scrambled eggs so I decided to go with that instead. The salmon pastrami came on top a slice of homemade pumpernickel bread, along with a generous serving of soft herb scrambled eggs! The salmon together with the dollop of *gasp* whipped honey was so delish! The green chilli capers gave the dish freshness and texture while the salted kernels on the side added a lovely nuttiness to the overall plate.
Uncommon. was definitely befitting of its name – uncommon. They’ve manage to pull off a delicious menu that not only promotes wholesome clean-eating, but does so without being all in your face about it. This is a cafe where you’ll be able to take not just your vegan buddy to, but your carnivorous mate as well – and have them both leave feeling satisfied! 😛
A cafe with an unsuspectingly wholesome menu that you can enjoy – whether you’re a vegan or a carnivore!
