The thing that surprised me the most when I first walked into Vincent the Dog was just how small the place actually was. Aside from a few outdoor tables, there was just one big communal table inside that could probably seat a maximum of ten people comfortably. There were also a few seats available at the windowsill, which was where Adeline and I opted to sit as it had been raining outside.
The second thing that had surprised me was their selection of waffle sandwiches – which we had come specifically to try. Mixed berry compote? Pulled pork shoulder on waffles?! And one containing just cheese??!
Halloumi Waffle Sandwich $13.9
After seeing Adeline ordering the pulled pork, I was beginning to have second thoughts about my own order of the cheese-only sandwich. However after a few bites, I knew that I had made the right choice. The pieces of halloumi along with the slightly spicy chipotle aioli, were so deliciously salty and gave a nice depth of flavour to the fluffy but otherwise plain waffles. If you aren’t too fussed about having no meat in your sandwich, I seriously urge you to order these halloumi waffles!
Pulled Pork Open Waffle Sandwich $14.9
However if you simply cannot bear to part with your meat, these pulled pork shoulder waffles would be the winning choice. Not only were the waffles both eggy and fluffy at the same time (which was definitely to my liking), but that 9-hour slow cooked meat on top was just so incredibly juicy. And the pieces themselves? They were practically falling apart at the fork.
At first glance, this cute little establishment could easily be overlooked as just another small unassuming building when you walk past it in Carlton. But it is definitely home to some of the most amazing savoury waffles that I have ever had.
However due to the limited seating, I would probably advise anyone to avoid going on the weekends. But on any typical chilly Melburnian day, it doesn’t sound half bad to be cosied up in here with a delicious hearty meal.
Amazing waffle sandwiches! Especially the haloumi. Get the pulled pork if you want something with meat.
